distance modulus

In astronomy, measure of the distance to an object in the universe, such as a star or galaxy, expressed as the difference between the object's apparent magnitude (representing its apparent brightness to us) and its absolute magnitude (representing its true brightness). The absolute magnitude is deduced from the object's type and size. The apparent magnitude is obtained by direct observation.
