dolce stil nuovo

A style of Italian lyric verse written between about 1250 and 1300. It was characterized by musicality, the spiritualization of courtly love, and a mystical and philosophical strain in the analysis of love. It was expressed in sonnets, canzoni, and ballads. The style was developed by Guido Guinizelli (c. 1240–1276), Guido Cavalcanti, Gino da Pistoia (c. 1265–c. 1336), and above all Dante, whose lyrics in his La vita nuova, inspired by his love for Beatrice, are the finest examples of the dolce stil nuovo. It greatly influenced Petrarch and through him many later Italian poets.

The term was coined by Dante in Purgatorio XXIV 57.
