Dole

French town in the département of Jura, on the River Doubs and the Rhine–Rhône canal; population (1990) 26,000. Situated on a vine-clad slope, it faces the heights of the forest of Chaux. The town has iron and copper foundries. Other industries include the manufacture of machines and chemicals. Its Roman name was Dola Sequanorum, and it was the capital of the former province of Franche-Comté before being displaced by Besançon.

The chemist Louis Pasteur was born in Dole.
