Runnell's essay assignment asks students to examine the ideology of language in-use, and to understand and think critically about the ways in which groups of individuals attempt to disrupt the dominant ideology (the oppression of African Americans, gays, and women) by engaging in new language systems. She historically traces the defining differences of 19th-century motherhood between white women and enslaved women, noting that the Industrial Revolution instigated the dominant ideology of "True Womanhood" characterized by "the virtues of piety, purity, and passivity" (127). Deconstructing the dominant ideology about poverty, Rank insists that since the poor are poor for structural reasons, we should stop thinking about them as a tribe apart. |
