donna del Lago, La

Opera by Gioachino Rossini (libretto by A L Tottola, based on Walter Scott's poem), first produced at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples, Italy, on 24 September 1819. The story, set in Scotland, tells how King James V loves Ellen, the daughter of the rebel Douglas. She in turn loves Malcolm, but must marry Douglas's ally Roderick. After Roderick is killed, James spares the captive Douglas and sanctions the marriage of Ellen and Malcolm.
