Doom

Popular computer game released in 1994. It is one of a series of games from the Texas-based company id Software, which specializes in 3-D graphics, alien monsters, and complex mazes which players must navigate to find secret treasures and hidden keys along the way. Doom can be played competitively over a network as well as on a single computer.

Because the company has encouraged players to create their own additional levels for Doom (and its other games) by releasing the necessary source code, a whole culture has grown up around Doom and id's other games.
