dormitory| Originally the sleeping quarters of monks. In some monasteries the dormitories were on the ground floor, giving easy communication with the church, though generally they formed the upper storey of the cloisters. Sometimes they were long halls, but more often a series of cells or cubicles. Today the name is applied to communal bedrooms in schools, hostels, and so on. |
