tract

Chant with penitential words, sung after the Gradual in the Mass in Lent (in place of the Alleluia). Tracts are the only surviving examples in the regular chants of the Mass of ‘direct psalmody’, sung without antiphon or respond. They occur only in modes two and eight, and it is possible that those of mode two were originally Graduals. Their structure is that of a highly elaborated psalm-tone. The number of verses ranges from 2 to 14.
