Civic Center

Name of two city-centre districts, in the US cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. In Los Angles, Civic Centre forms the administrative heart of the conurbation, and is the site of a number of government buildings, including the 28-storey City Hall (1928). In San Francisco, it encompasses the central plaza and surrounding district; the ornate City Hall (1915) and the War Memorial Opera House (built 1932; site of the signing of the United Nations charter in 1944) are located here.
