dragoman

Interpreter or guide, especially in countries where Arabic, Turkish, or Farsi is spoken. The term was first used of diplomatic officials at the Turkish court, who were appointed by the Turkish government, which disliked using the language of any non-Muslim nation; these officials had considerable importance.
