drift net

Long straight net suspended from the water surface and used by commercial fishermen. They are controversial as they are indiscriminate in what they catch. Dolphins, sharks, turtles, and other marine animals can drown as a consequence of becoming entangled.

In 1991 the UN proposed to limit the length of drift nets to 2.5 km. The European Union introduced the limit on nets used for tuna in the Bay of Biscay 1994 (2,000 dolphins were caught accidentally there 1991). The European Commission proposed 1994 a total ban of drift nets by 1998.
