du Pont, Samuel Francis (1830-1865)

US naval officer. He became commander of the South Atlantic blockading squadron in 1861. He led a successful fleet assault that captured Port Royal, South Carolina, but, after failing to capture Charleston using the same methods, he resigned his command.

He was born in Bergen Point, New Jersey. He commanded Commodore Robert Stockton's flagship in California operations during the Mexican War. Du Pont Circle in Washington, DC, is named after him.
