Opera by Giuseppe Verdi (libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on Lord Byron's drama), first produced at the Teatro Argentina, Rome, Italy, on 3 November 1844. In the story, the doge's son Jacopo has been accused of murder. He is first imprisoned, then exiled, against the pleas of his wife, Lucrezia. It is revealed too late that Jacopo is innocent: he dies upon leaving Venice.
