due corde

In music, direction to a pianist to depress the soft pedal halfway (as in Beethoven's Piano Sonata in A Flat, 1822) so that the hammer hits two of the three strings for each note, or directing a violinist to use two strings, which affects the timbre, even though the passage in question could be played on one string.
