Dum-Dum

Part of the huge Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) conurbation in West Bengal state, northeast India; population (1991) 40,900. It was the headquarters of the Bengal artillery from 1783 to 1853, where ‘dum-dum’(soft-nosed) bullets were first made. It still has a munitions factory, as well as jute mills, steel rolling mills, and other manufacturing industries. Kolkata's international airport is at Dum-Dum.
