calcification

In medicine, the deposition of calcium salts in bone cells as part of the growth process. Bone is comprised of fibrous tissue and a matrix containing calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. Bones grow in thickness from the fibrous tissue and the calcium salts deposited in their cells by calcification.

Pathologically, chordoma is a gelatinous, multilobulated mass with areas of dystrophic calcification.
The masses are usually firm and gray-white, and dystrophic calcification is common.
In our patient, CT and MRI detected dystrophic calcification in a deep lobe parotid mass.
