hearing

Ability to perceive sounds. In humans, the organ of hearing is the ear. Humans are unable to hear sounds that have frequencies below 20 Hz or above 20 kHz. Between these two values is our hearing or audible range. The exact width of our audible range varies from person to person, but in general as we age the range narrows. Some animals such as dogs, dolphins, and bats can hear sounds beyond the human audible range. Sounds with frequencies above 20 kHz are called ultrasounds.
