fret

On the fingerboard of a plucked or bowed string instrument, an inlaid ridge of a material such as gut, wood, ivory, or metal, or a circlet of nylon, against which a string is pressed to shorten its vibrating length and therefore change pitch. Frets enable the player to play in tune with certainty, since the vibrating length of the string is fixed by the fret.
