egalitarianism |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia | 0.06 sec. |
egalitarianismBelief that all citizens in a state should have equal rights and privileges. Interpretations of this can vary, from the notion of equality of opportunity to equality in material welfare and political decision-making. Some states reject egalitarianism; most accept the concept of equal opportunities but recognize that people's abilities vary widely. Even those states which claim to be socialist find it necessary to have hierarchical structures in the political, social, and economic spheres. Egalitarianism was one of the principles of the French Revolution. How to thank TFD for its existence? Drawn from one hundred and fifty letters written by Inman Perkins to his fiancee and later wife, Inman's War offers an intensely personal look at individual valor and suffering, and allows lay readers and historians alike to appreciate the contribution of "colored battalions" not only to the war effort, but to the improved egalitarianism of American culture. |
