egret

Any of several herons with long tufts of feathers on the head or neck. They belong to the order Ciconiiformes.

The snowy egret Egretta thula of North America, about 2 ft/60 cm long, was almost hunted to extinction for its graceful plumes before the practice was made illegal. The little egret E. garzetta 2 ft/60cm long, is found in Asia, Africa, southern Europe, and Australia.
