implantationIn mammals, the process by which the developing embryo attaches itself to the wall of the mother's uterus and stimulates the development of the placenta. In humans it occurs 6–8 days after ovulation. In some species, such as seals and bats, implantation is delayed for several months, during which time the embryo does not grow; thus the interval between mating and birth may be longer than the gestation period.
