embryologyStudy of the changes undergone by an organism from its conception as a fertilized ovum (egg) to its emergence into the world at hatching or birth. It is mainly concerned with the changes in cell organization in the embryo and the way in which these lead to the structures and organs of the adult (the process of differentiation). Applications of embryology include embryo transplants, both commercial (for example, in building up a prize dairy-cow herd quickly at low cost) and in obstetric medicine (as a method for helping couples with fertility problems to have children). | For example, embryologists could use it to watch cells during the development of the internal organs of an embryo. In 1997, wrote Tom Bethell in The Politically Incorrect Guide to Science (2005), "British embryologist Michael Richardson and an international team compared Haeckel's drawings with photographs of actual vertebrate embryos, demonstrating conclusively that the drawings misrepresented the truth. In 1980, an historic conference attended by a wide spectrum of researchers including geologists, paleontologists, ecologists, population geneticists, embryologists, and molecular biologists was held at Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History to discuss macroevolution in the light of modern synthesis. |
