Emporia

Town and administrative headquarters of Lyon County, east-central Kansas; population (2000) 26,800. It is situated in the Flint Hills, 80 km/50 mi southwest of Topeka. It is a rail and truck hub for grain and livestock, and processes such food products as flour, meat, and cheese. Manufactures include printing equipment and glass bottles. William Allen White published the nationally-renowned Emporia Gazette here (1895–1944). The town is home to Emporia State University (1863).

Emporia

Town and administrative headquarters of Greensville County (from which it is itself administratively independent), southeast Virginia; population (1990) 5,300. It is situated the Meherrin River, which is dammed to the west of the town, and 16 km/10 mi north of the North Carolina state line. It processes and ships peanuts and other agricultural products, and has a lumber industry. A Civil War skirmish occurred here on 10 December 1864.
