emulator

In computing, an item of software or firmware that allows one device to imitate the functioning of another. Emulator software is commonly used to allow one make of computer to run programs written for a different make of computer. This allows a user to select from a wider range of applications programs, and perhaps to save money by running programs designed for an expensive computer on a cheaper model.
