catch

A part-song, in vogue in England from the early 17th to the 19th centuries, in which the voices follow each other in the manner of a canon or round, with the difference in the most characteristic examples that the words, thus mixed up, acquire new and ludicrous meanings, often of an indecent nature in the 17th century.
