endotoxin

In biology, heat stable complex of protein and lipopolysaccharide that is produced following the death of certain bacteria. Endotoxins are typically produced by the Gram negative bacteria and can cause fever. They can also cause shock by rendering the walls of the blood vessels permeable so that fluid leaks into the tissues and blood pressure falls sharply.

To determine the influence of endotoxin on the incidence of acute respiratory illness during the first 2 years of life, we carried out a longitudinal follow-up study, beginning at birth, of 332 children born in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
However, endotoxemia in liver transplant recipients has been associated with graft failure and a high mortality rate (4,5), and in gram-negative bacterial infections, the physiologic effects of endotoxin may persist after adequate antimicrobial drug treatment.
An immune system underexposed to endotoxins may not be able to combat unknown invaders later on like allergens (allergy-causing molecules).
