Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Legal, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.02 sec. |
Entente CordialeAgreement reached by Britain and France in 1904 recognizing British interests in Egypt and French interests in Morocco. It was expressly designed to check the colonial ambitions of the German Second Empire under William II. Though not a formal alliance, the Entente generated tripartite cooperation between Britain, France, and Russia from 1907 (the Triple Entente), and formed the basis for Anglo-French military collaboration before the outbreak of World War I in 1914.
