Enterprise

Town in Coffee County, southeast Alabama; population (1990) 20,100. It is located 45 km/28 mi west-northwest of Dothan. Local agriculture includes peanut, potato, and sugar cane farming and the raising of livestock. Enterprise has various light industries, and is a service centre for Fort Rucker, 13 km/8 mi to the northeast. The town is home to Enterprise State Junior College (1963).

Enterprise was primarily a cotton producing centre from the 1840s until 1915, when the Mexican boll weevil destroyed the crop. In 1918 the town erected its Boll Weevil Monument, thanking the weevil for forcing diversification on local farmers.
