enterprise zoneFormer special zone introduced in the UK in 1980 and designated by government to encourage industrial and commercial activity, usually in economically-depressed areas such as the Isle of Dogs in London's Docklands area. Investment was attracted by means of tax reduction and other financial incentives. Enterprise zones no longer exist, but assisted areas and intermediate areas survive.
