partisanMember of an armed group that operates behind enemy lines or in occupied territories during wars. The name ‘partisans’ was first given to armed bands of Russians who operated against Napoleon's army in Russia during 1812, but has since been used to describe Russian, Yugoslav, Italian, Greek, and Polish Resistance groups against the Germans during World War II.
