entrée

In the 17th and 18th centuries, a piece of music in a stately rhythm accompanying the entry of processions in ballets and other stage pieces; also, more generally, an introduction or prelude to any work, but more especially a ballet or opera where it accompanies the rise of the curtain; an entrée could also be the beginning of each new scene in a ballet.
