EquatorGreat circle whose plane is perpendicular to the Earth's axis (the line joining the poles). Its length is 40,092 km/24,902 mi, divided into 360 degrees of longitude. The Equator encircles the broadest part of the Earth, and represents 0° latitude. It divides the Earth into two halves, called the northern and the southern hemispheres.
