Erwin

Town and administrative headquarters of Unicoi County, northeast Tennessee; population (1990) 5,000. It is situated on the Nolichucky River and Rock Creek. Lying 21 km/13 mi south-southwest of Johnson City, it is in the Cherokee National Forest, near the Unaka Mountain Wilderness and its recreation areas. Settled in 1775, Erwin makes clothing, wood products, and pottery. It has a nuclear services industry. It is home to a National Fish Hatchery.
