Phthiocerol diesters are composed of a mixture of long chain [beta]-diols that are esterified by multimethyl-branched fatty acids. This observation indicated the presence of a COOH group in the unknown because carboxylic acids are readily esterified in either methanolic HCl or BSTFA. The pH of ASA emulsions prepared with the esterified starch remained constant, indicating that the hydrophobically modified starch molecules prevented ASA from hydrolyzing. |
