candle fish

Bony fish closely allied to the smelt. It lives off the Pacific coast of North America. At spawning time, its flesh contains so much oil that it can be dried and burned as a candle.

Classification

Candle fish are in genus Thaleichthys in the order Salmoniformes, class Osteichthyes.

In my lifetime, there has also been a diminished return of the eulachon (candle fish) in our traditional harvesting areas.
A common autumn treat among the Tsimsian of Canada's west coast is a mixture of blueberries and a fat made from the boiled oil of the eulachon fish.
