euphemismFigure of speech that substitutes a direct or offensive statement with one that is suitably mild or evasive. Thus, ‘he passed away’ is used in place of ‘he died’; ‘sleep with someone’ substitutes for ‘have sex with someone’; and ‘liquidate the opposition’ has a softer impact than ‘kill one's enemies’. | This obfuscation and euphemistic spinning of reality is based on politics rather than religion, on Israel's acquisition of trillions in U. The euphemistic, double-standard language we use to describe our discriminatory treatment of children doesn't really matter. It's a word for which I've never had much patience, primarily because its use in the children's literature field is too often euphemistic or bullying. |
