everlasting flower

Any flower head with coloured bracts that retains its colour when cut and dried.

They are mostly of the composite family, including some species of Ammobium, Helichrysum, and Xeranthemum. The strawflower of Australia Helichrysum bracteatum is a popular example.

Most prominent among these would be the strawflower (Helichrysum bracteatum), notable for its 2-inch everlasting flowers that appear over a period of many months in white, yellow, gold, orange, pink, lavender or bronze.
I assume this botanical name refers to its flowers, which, like those of the yarrow, would appear to stand up admirably in an everlasting flower bouquet.
