Everyman

Popular English morality play of the early 16th century, probably derived from an earlier Dutch play, Elckerlijc. Summoned by Death, Everyman is forsaken by his former friends – allegorical abstractions such as Fellowship and Kindred – and is saved only by Good Deeds, who accompanies him to the grave.

Everyman

Incidental music by Sibelius, Op. 83, for Hugo von Hofmannsthal's German version, Jedermann, of the 15th-century English morality play Everyman. It was composed in 1916 and first performed at the National Theatre, Helsinki, Finland, on 5 November 1916. Six monologues from Everyman were set by Frank Martin for baritone and piano in 1943; an orchestral version was arranged in 1949.
