exchange transfusion

In medicine, blood transfusion procedure carried out on a newborn infant. Blood is removed from the baby using the umbilical vein and is replaced with the same quantity of blood obtained from a donor. The procedure is repeated several times to remove damaged red blood cells while maintaining the blood volume and red blood cell count of the infant. Haemolytic disease of the newborn and severe jaundice may require an exchange transfusion.
