expression marks

In musical composition, all the indications by which composers indicate their wishes as to the manner of performance of a work, especially from the dynamic point of view (forte, piano, crescendo, diminuendo); they may extend also to matters of speed and rhythm (rallentando, rubato, or accelerando). Expression marks were little used before the 18th century and hardly at all before the 17th century.
