The second film finds a redheaded gallery employee, Karon Hepburn, wearing mourning black and gazing expressionlessly through a window before descending a flight of stairs. So, too, do Thomas Struth's photographs of Peru, Hans Hamid Rasmussen's funky embroideries, Jorge Pardo's architectural fantasy, Yin Xiuzhen's colorful, toylike urban landscape, made by seamstresses during the course of the exhibition, and Aernout Mik's video installation Pulverous, 2003, which contemplates with dry hilarity a group of people slowly, meticulously, and expressionlessly destroying the contents of a large grocery store. Simpson's telecast trial into a candy-colored, flatly rendered animated cartoon, Tim Lee (of Vancouver) expressionlessly recites Beastie Boys lyrics, while fellow Vancouverite Althea Thauberger's aspiring female singer-songwriters lip-synch against the beautiful Canadian landscape, and the Bay Area's Trisha Donnelly uses a trampoline to help herself achieve Iggy Pop's famous contortions. |
