Abnormalities of the eye that impair vision. Glass or plastic lenses, in the form of spectacles or contact lenses, are the usual means of correction. Common optical defects are short-sightedness or myopia; farsightedness or hypermetropia; lack of accommodation or presbyopia; and astigmatism. Other eye defects include colour blindness.
