föhn

Warm dry wind that blows down the leeward slopes of mountains.

The air heats up as it descends because of the increase in pressure, and it is dry because all the moisture was dropped on the windward side of the mountain. In the valleys of Switzerland it is regarded as a health hazard, producing migraine and high blood pressure. A similar wind, chinook, is found on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in North America.
