Characeae

Family of 250 species of green algae found in fresh and brackish water in pools and slow-flowing streams. The plants grow to about 20–60 cm/8–24 in high, and are anchored to the bottom of freshwater lakes or ponds, where they form underwater meadows. They are used in biology to demonstrate the circulation of the cytoplasm in plant cells.
