Cyprinodontidae

Large family of fish. They resemble carps, but have teeth in both jaws, no barbels and the head and body are covered with scales. They are found in fresh or brackish water.

Classification

The family Cyprinodontidae is in the order Atheriniformes, class Osteichthyes.

The most curious genus is Anableps, in which the iris of the eyes has two pupils; the fishes swim with the head half out of the water, and the lower pupil is adapted for sight below water and the upper for above water.
