Opera by Giacomo Puccini (libretto by G Civinini and C Zangarini, based on David Belasco's play), first produced at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, on 10 December 1910. In the story, Jack Rance the sheriff and Dick Johnson the bandit compete for Minnie's affections. Realizing that Dick is an outlaw, Jack hunts him down and prepares to lynch him, but Minnie arrives in time to save the day.
