death rate

Number of deaths per 1,000 of the population of an area over the period of a year. Death rate is a factor in demographic transition.

Death rate is linked to a number of social and economic factors such as standard of living, diet, and access to clean water and medical services. The death rate is therefore lower in wealthier countries; for example, in the USA it is 9/1,000; in Nigeria 18/1,000.
