favola d'Orfeo, La

Opera by Claudio Monteverdi (libretto by A Striggio), first produced at the court of the hereditary prince Francesco Gonzaga in Mantua, Italy, during Carnival in 1607. It was revived in a version by Vincent d'Indy and given in concert performance in Paris, France, in 1904; it was staged in Oxford, England, in 1925, under Jack Westrup. There are also versions by Gian Malipiero, Carl Orff, Paul Hindemith, Raymond Leppard, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

The opera of the same title by Alfredo Casella (libretto by C Pavolini, after A Ambrogini [Poliziano (1454–1494)]), was first produced at the Teatro Goldoni, Venice, Italy, on 6 September 1932.
