The fetal allograft is exposed to the maternal immune system at the placenta and fetal membranes (the amnion and chorion), collectively described as the maternal-fetal interface. A review of records showed that 14 percent of the cerebral palsy infants had been born to women diagnosed with an inflammation of the uterine lining or fetal membrane shortly before or after giving birth, compared with only 4 percent of the healthy infants in the comparison group, the researchers report in the Nov. A recent study sponsored in part by NIAID found that HIV-infected women who gave birth more than four hours after the rupture of the fetal membranes were nearly twice as likely to transmit HIV to their infants, as compared to women who delivered within four hours of membrane rupture. |
