The organization is known for its colorful parades, red fezzes, circuses and clowns, but more appreciated for its network of 22 specialized, no-cost hospitals that treat children with orthopedic problems, bums and spinal cord injuries. Photos show the shift from traditional to modern ways of life, with more than one family photo showing men wearing fezzes next to relatives wearing Western suits and bow ties. The wave of colors almost overtakes me: Women in red, fuschia, purple and turquoise grand boubous with matching head ties and beautiful, intricately braided hairstyles, and men in elegant, embroidered white caftans, bouffant pantaloons, turbans and tasseled fezzes. |
